AGGIE MEN’S BASKETBALL VS. TEXAS

It was a Lonestar Showdown at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX, on Sunday, December 8, between the long-time rivals, Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies. This was just the second time the two have met since the Aggies left the Big 12 to join the SEC in 2012. The last time the two met was in 2015 at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament in the Bahamas where the Aggies defeated the Longhorns 84-73, ending a 5- game losing streak in the series.

It was a slow start to the game with the score being in single digits for the first seven minutes. However, the Aggies were able to cut the lead to 10 and trailed 27-17 heading into halftime. Emanuel Miller’s layup at 11:53 in the second half pulled Texas A&M within six until Jase Febres hit a 3- pointer to start a 10-2 run that pushed the Texas lead to 14. The Aggies weren’t able to fully recover from the double-digit deficit until right before the last minute of the game. The Aggies shot 48% (20-for-42) from the field compared to the Longhorns 42% (23-for-55). Although the Aggies had a higher field goal percentage, they were outscored on three-pointers made, 27% (3-for-11) compared to UT’s 31% (9-for-29) and free throws made. The only player in double digits for Texas A&M was Josh Nebo who led the team with 16 points. The Aggies leading scorer, Savion Flagg, who averages 10.7 points per game, scored 8 points. The Texas Longhorns defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 60-50.

The season is young, and the Aggies currently sit at the bottom of their conference with an overall record of 3-5, losing their last four games to Harvard, Temple, Fairfield, and Texas. Although they’re off to a sluggish start, the best is yet to come as players and coaches get acclimated under the new leadership of Head Coach Buzz Williams. Here’s to turning things around as the Aggies play Texas A&M Corpus Christi next Sunday.
