AGGIES IN REVIEW – BY: GEORGE KOPF ’22 WEEK OF NOV. 18TH

Football was strong at home, volleyball rested, soccer moves on, swimming & diving is back in action, men’s basketball struggled, and women’s basketball had a nail-biter. This and much more in this week’s “Aggies in Review.” Here are the details from last week’s action.

Football

A chilly, November evening under the bright lights of Kyle Field served as the backdrop for the final home game this season. Though close through three quarters, the Aggies finally pulled away, picking up the 30-6 win over South Carolina. It appeared that the time travel is real, as this team looked like the Wrecking Crew of old. Moreover, the six points are the lowest allowed in an SEC conference game for the Aggies since the 2015 shutout win over Vanderbilt. The Aggies (7-3, 4-2 SEC) take on the first of two tough games, first going “between the hedges” against the fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (9-1, 6-1) in a top-25 matchup (Aggies ranked #24 in the AP Poll). Kickoff is scheduled for just after 2:30 PM CT and will be nationally televised on CBS.

Women’s Volleyball

The Lady Aggies (18-6, 10-4) responded nicely after the recent loss, as they took down the Auburn Tigers in three straight sets on Wednesday evening at Reed Arena. They will play their first game in nine games after being off this weekend with two final home games, first against Mississippi State on Friday at 6:30 PM and then Ole Miss on Sunday at 3 PM.

Women’s Soccer

Ellis Field played host to the most recent installment of the Lone Star Showdown, in which after 1-0 deficit, the Aggies scored four unanswered and kicked their way into the NCAA Second Round with their 4-1 victory over the Texas Longhorns. The Aggies’ (14-4-3) road to the College Cup takes them to Los Angeles, CA for a clash with the #9 USC Trojans on Friday at 3:30 PM CT.

Swimming & Diving

Both teams dive back into the pool, hosting the Art Adamson Invite, bringing in teams from the West Coast, including USC and Stanford. The three-day meet kicks off on Thursday evening and concludes with the finals on Saturday at 6 PM. All the action can be seen from the Rec Center Natatorium and on SEC Network+.

Men’s Basketball

In front of a crowd of 10,344, the largest since Tennessee last year (10,234), the Aggies lost to #8 Gonzaga, falling 79-49 on Friday night. Although they had a 14-11 lead early first half, the Aggies (2-1) could not get anything going offensively, resulting in a seven-minute scoring drought. The Bulldogs (4-0) used a 20-0 run during that Aggie slump, ultimately taking a 40-19 lead into the locker room. Wendell Mitchell, Savion Flagg and the rest of the team look to bounce back against Troy (1-3) before heading to Disney World for Thanksgiving and the Orlando Invitational. The Troy game will tip-off at 7 PM from Reed Arena on Wednesday night.

Women’s Basketball

Chennedy Carter may be the Aggies’ star player, but it was her supporting cast that got the win. Junior Ciera Johnson’s 8 points, including the game-winning bucket with 0.7 seconds remaining, helped the Lady Aggies come back to College Station victorious after a win in Houston against Rice, 62-61. Carter led the team in scoring again (29 points), guiding her team to a 37-29 halftime lead. The Aggies (3-0), like the soccer team, will head out west to Los Angeles, CA to face the USC Trojans on Saturday at 7:30 PM.
