AGGIES IN REVIEW – BY: GEORGE KOPF ’22 WEEK OF OCT. 21ST

Football literally ‘picked up’ another win, volleyball swept their road trip, soccer struggled and lost, golf chipped to a medal place finish all in this week’s “Aggies in Review.” Here are the details from last week’s action.

Football

Winning a road game is never easy, especially in the SEC. Despite two turnovers and an overall weak offensive performance, it was the defense that saved the day and won this one for the Aggies (4-3, 2-2 SEC), getting an ugly 24-17 victory over Ole Miss. Buddy Johnson had a 62-yard “scoop-and-score” touchdown, after a forced fumble sack, courtesy of star defensive end Justin Madubuike, who also provided a blocked field-goal in the gutsy, yet-productive performance by the Wrecking Crew. They return back to Kyle Field for the final three home games of the year, starting with welcoming the Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-4, 1-3) for an early 11:00 AM kickoff on the SEC Network.

Women’s Volleyball

The Aggies completed the Mississippi Mudslide with a sweep, gaining two very big road game wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss. The Lady Aggies (13-5, 5-3 SEC), now third place in the conference, look to carry that momentum and take down a good Georgia Bulldog team (14-4, 6-1), who is currently tied for first. First serve will take place on Sunday from Reed Arena at 2:00 PM.

Women’s Soccer

All good things must come to an end, as the Maroon Militia student section at Ellis Field witnessed the first loss at home in over a year as the Aggies fell to Arkansas 3-1. They look to get back on track with two games this week: a road matchup against Vanderbilt (Thursday at 7:00 PM in Nashville, TN) and a home match against Missouri (Sunday at 4:00 PM, ESPNU). The ladies still sit 5 points behind first in the SEC standings with a 4-2-1 record in league play and a 10-3-3 record overall.

Cross Country

In the Arturo Barrios Invitational here in College Station, both the men and women did well. The Aggie men placed second, while the women came in with a fourth-place finish. Next up on the schedule are the SEC Championships, occurring in Lexington, KY on November 1.

Swimming & Diving

The two-day meet for both the men and women against ranked Ohio State ended well. The men squeaked out a 6-point upset over the 5th-ranked Buckeyes, after their relay team was disqualified in the final race. The women on the other hand dominated the entire meet, claiming a 65 point win over the 14th-ranked Ohio State Lady Buckeyes. Both teams will be back in action to take on rival Texas here in College Station on November 1.

Men’s Golf

This season has been incredible for the Aggie men, not finishing worse than 5th place, as they came back to Aggieland with a bronze-plaque and third-place finish at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Atlanta. In addition to the team finish, redshirt freshman William Paysse finished as individual co-champion with a -7 (209) score. They will not be back in action until the spring semester, when they travel to Jacksonville, FL for a tournament in February.
